For the second day in a row, the frost-covered trees on the mid-to-upper areas of the resort were stunning, and with clear visibility this morning, the snowy landscape of the valley below made for an even more breathtaking view. “There wasn’t as much snowfall as expected, but the trees are beautiful,” was the comment from a patrol member I spoke to. As I stepped off the gondola, which got running at its scheduled 8 a.m. start time, light, dry snow was drifting through the air.

The new snowfall may have been light, but the 2 to 3 cm of fresh snow on the groomed runs was dry and silky, making for an enjoyable ride! Laying down first tracks on the firm, groomed wet snow surface along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) was an unbeatable thrill. Meanwhile, the ungroomed terrain along the Alpen Quad and Kurobishi 3rd Pair lifts was marked with firm bumps and tracks, but was now covered with about 5 cm of light fresh snow.

The south-side route of Usagidaira (pictured) and the Panorama Course had the same conditions as Kurobishi—well-packed groomed wet snow with 2 to 3 cm of light fresh snow on top—making for smooth and enjoyable runs. Meanwhile, the Grat Quad, which had been out of service since 2/10 (Mon.) for snow clearing, resumed operations today at 10 a.m., reopening access to the Riesen Grat Course!

The clouds gradually cleared, and by around 9 a.m., blue skies emerged with sunlight shining through. The Skyline Course and HAPPO PARKS (pictured) had firm, groomed wet snow bases with 1 to 2 cm of light fresh snow on top. The Kitaone Traverse Cat Track featured a well-packed, groomed granular snow surface, while the Sakka Wave, Sakka Slope, and Shirakaba Slope were also groomed with moist granular snow surfaces that had begun to soften.
