Tsugaike REPORT

2025.03.07359 cm / Snow & Sunshine

Only one week remains until the entry deadline for the “Tsugaike Favorite Restaurant Championship”! At Ramen Yu, the Niboshi Tonkotsu Ramen (pictured, ¥1,500) features a rich, thick broth paired with medium-thick homemade noodles. The flavors of two types of dried sardines blend perfectly with the deep umami of pork bone broth. Topping it all off is premium seaweed.

This morning was all about first tracks at their best! Along the Han-no-ki High-Speed Pair, about 1 cm of fresh, light snow topped the moderately-packed, groomed powder surface, making for an incredibly smooth ride. As I cruised down, the groomed midsection of Han-no-ki had a mix of powder and some granular snow, while the lower section (pictured) featured the same base conditions, but with 5 to 15 cm of heavier fresh snow piled up.

From the lower Han-no-ki area, I hiked up for a few minutes to reach the untouched slopes of Maruyama (pictured). The run was covered in 10 to 20 cm of heavier fresh snow, on top of a moderately firm, groomed mix of granular and wet snow. I cruised straight down the gentle slope at the start, picked up speed through the steeper midsection, and then glided smoothly in a straight line again as the slope leveled out toward the end.

I met two visitors from Germany (pictured), who shared their excitement, saying, “JAPOW is amazing! We’re enjoying our four-day stay in the Hakuba area. Danke schön!” I also ran into the owner of NIKUMASA, who told me, “Shirakaba had 20 cm of fresh snow in the morning—it felt incredible! Champion was fantastic, too!” The weather shifted between periods of sunshine and clouds, with snow continuing to fall, carried by the wind.
