Although the spring skiing discount period has begun, Hakuba Happo-One Ski Resort remains “fully open” thanks to abundant snow cover! After light rain yesterday, this morning brought calm, sunny skies with wispy high clouds. It was warm from the start, and by around 8 a.m., my thermometer showed +1°C at the upper part of the resort.

The area along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) and the south-side route of Usagidaira had well-packed groomed wet snow that provided solid edge grip. In terms of the ungroomed slopes, the area along the Alpen Quad area featured large, hard moguls, while the area along the Kurobishi 3 Pair had similarly hard, but small to medium-sized moguls, each topped with 1 to 2 cm of fresh, wet snow.

The Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) had a quite firm, groomed granular snow surface up top, but noticeably softened as I skied further down. The Skyline Course had a hard packed, groomed granular snow base, while Sakka Wave and the Shirakaba Slope had groomed, loose corn snow surfaces.

There’s still plenty of snow at the base of the resort, but the roads are now mostly ice-free, making driving easier. This Sunday, 3/16, is Kids Ski Day, where elementary school children can ride the lifts for free! Additionally, the Hakuba Happo-One Ski School will be hosting a Kids’ Ski Technique Competition on the southern side of the Nakiyama Slope’s Public Course.
