It was a calm and pleasant sunny morning. With this season’s abundant snowfall, New Paradise (500m, max 32°, avg 23°) is an especially appealing option this March. Today, the slope was beautifully groomed all the way to the edges, and the softened granular snow on the steep section allowed for smooth and fast skiing.

I overheard people skiing down saying things like, “It’s so soft!” Being a weekday in March, the slopes were empty, and with the great slopes groomed and in great condition, I found myself wanting to lap steep slopes. By the way, when looking down at Lake Aoki, the roof of the WHITE HOTEL GRAND HAKUBA (the building to the left and slightly below the skier’s white helmet) stood out for still having plenty of snow piled on top.

Lake Down, Lake View (pictured), and the Carving Slope were all similarly groomed with moderately soft, easy-to-ski corn snow. On the wide Lake View Slope, I enjoyed carving turns at my own pace, relaxing and having fun. It was so warm that I wished I had worn one less layer of clothing.

Before the resort opened in the morning, I met a group of four from Hong Kong (pictured). They shared, “We’ve visited Japan many times, and this time we’re staying for two weeks. We’re skiing at Hakuba Sanosaka yesterday and today, and tomorrow we plan to go to Iwatake.” The groomed Paradise and Paradise Downhill slopes (pictured) also had moderately soft, groomed corn snow bases that made for smooth skiing.
