The Tsugaike Nature Park had even more snow than I expected, and the entire landscape was brilliantly white! The Tsugaike Visitor Center (pictured) and the Tsugaike Hütte Memorial Hall were more than half-buried in snow, and while it seemed possible to climb onto the roofs, doing so is not allowed. Both the groomed forest trail and the ungroomed areas had well-packed granular snow, making it easy to walk even without snowshoes on the gentle slopes.

I ran into a backcountry guide and Patagonia Hakuba staff member (pictured, yellow jacket), who told me, “Great work today! We’re on a backcountry tour to Futamata.” They introduced me to their group, saying, “Everyone, this is the photographer from Snownavi, the most popular winter website in Hakuba. You’ll be featured in today’s report!”

The view from the Mizubasho Marsh area (pictured) felt completely different this time due to the unusually deep snow, presenting a striking new appearance. Even as someone who has visited the Tsugaike Nature Park countless times in both summer and winter, I was deeply moved by its beauty (the tiny figures in the distance are people). Due to the relatively mild temperature of -1°C, I found myself gradually working up a sweat as I walked.

The hiking trail on the lower section of the southern slope of Tenguhara (pictured), which usually has dense, overgrown vegetation in summer, was generally easy to ascend thanks to the firm and abundant snow cover. However, there were some spots with thick layers of soft snow and others with hard, crusted surfaces that were slippery. You can access the Tsugaike Nature Park via the ropeway, which is currently operating for the early spring season.
