I rode the 1st Quad Lift with a skier from Ehime and Osaka, who told me, “I always check your reports. I’ve been staying at my favorite hotel, Hotel Wakatsuki, since yesterday. It was warm yesterday, but since it’s cold today, the slopes are hard and I had to ski carefully first thing this morning.” It did in fact feel much colder than the official temperature suggested this morning. (Perhaps the temperature dropped as the day went on?)

Leo and Monkey, located along the 1st Quad, which opened at 8:30 a.m., were busy right from the morning. Meanwhile, Dog, Weasel, and Tiger are served by the 7th and 8th Pair lifts, which started at 9:00 a.m., so they began to fill up a bit later on. Whether due to the timing of the grooming or the slope orientation, Dog, Weasel, and Tiger had moderately soft granular snow bases that felt softer than Leo.

Leo had a hard packed, groomed granular snow base. I shared a conversation with a snowboarder from Saitama, who smoothly carved down the slope before telling me, “I always read your reports. I’m glad to see reports for not only Hakuba but also for places like Kurohime and other ski resorts. Keep up the great work!”

Majestic Mount Myoko, one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains, was clearly visible under the overcast sky from the area around the 8th Pair Lift. After descending from the 8th Pair (pictured), I skied to the skiers’ left side, where the gentle Weasel slope awaited. Continuing further, I reached the steeper Tiger Slope. This season, the Weasel slope allows dogs off-leash, and I saw happy dogs running freely around the area.
