The low-pressure system that brought wet snow to the Hakuba area yesterday has now moved off to the east. This morning, light snowfall at the base area was also wet, but with temperatures remaining low and a promising weather forecast, I had high hopes for the snow quality at Alps-Daira. Since the Goryu Telecabin’s start was delayed, I began my day with a warm-up on the Iimori Slope.

The Powder Snow Course (pictured), Soft Cream Course, and Merry Land Course had 1 to 2 cm of fresh wet snow on top of moderately soft, granular snow bases. My skis glided smoothly, allowing for smooth and controlled turns. On the middle section along the 6th Pair lift, preparations were underway for the IIMORI Mogul Festival scheduled for 3/20 (Thu., holiday).

The Goryu Telecabin started operating after a delay of about an hour, and as I got off, I was surrounded by dense fog and densely falling light snow, with a weak wind from the north. A staff member at the Alps 3rd Pair Lift commented, “We got more snow than expected.” In the un-groomed area along the upper part of the 3rd Pair Lift (pictured), about 25 to 30 cm of soft fresh snow had accumulated!

Although I bottomed out on the firmly packed, underlying wet snow base, the feeling of skiing powder for the first time in a while really boosted my excitement! The Panorama Course and Grand Prix Course had moderately firm, groomed wet snow bases with about 10 cm of light new snow on top. The Dynamic and Woody courses had firm, groomed wet snow bases with 2 to 5 cm of new moist snow.
