The Sunvalley, Maruike, and Hasuike area is packed with fun skiing. Surprisingly, there are quite a few courses here too, including two options along the short 134m Maruike Second Pair lift: a groomed slope ideal for beginners to practice skiing at a steady speed and a gentle bypass slope (pictured). This morning, light snowflakes were dancing in the breeze.

At the Hasuike Triple Lift (421m) station, I met a group of six visitors from Tokyo (pictured) who shared, “We came to Shiga Kogen for snowboarding two days ago, and today is our last day. We’ve learned how to snowboard over the three days, and it’s been so much fun!” With the relaxed pace typical of a weekday in March, I enjoyed leisurely runs on the slopes.

The Sunvalley Main Course (pictured) had about 5 cm of light, dry new snow covering a firm, groomed wet-snow base with a powder-like feel. I was impressed by the skilled skiers confidently carving turns at high speed. The longest lift in the area, the Hosaka First Quad (518m), also serves the Sunvalley A, Sunvalley B, Shirokuma, and Sunvalley Beginner courses.

Following yesterday’s fierce blizzard, which kept the lifts closed all day, the Hasuike Junior Course (pictured), Hasuike B, Maruike B, Maruike C, and Maruike Second Slope each had firm, groomed powder snow bases! Personally, I couldn’t resist heading back to the ungroomed Hasuike B Course, where the fluffy new snow felt fantastic under my skis.
