Although there is still plenty of snow, the Sakka 3 Triple, Kitaone 3 Pair, Shirakaba 2 Pair, and Nakiyama 2 Pair will be closing due to staffing and other factors on 3/23 (Sun.), while the Sakka 2 Pair (pictured, background), Sakka Kitaone Quad, Kokusai 1 Pair, and Shirakaba 1 Pair will close on 3/30 (Sun.). Ultimately, the key question is, “How long can we ski all the way down to the base?” I’ll continue to keep an eye on the conditions moving forward.

It was a hazy spring morning with soft sunlight filtering through the clouds, and an occasional light breeze blowing from the northwest. Along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) and on the Skyline Course, the groomed, moderately firm wet snow base offered a powder-like feel. A skier I met commented, “It was warm during the day yesterday, but the conditions this morning are better than I expected.”

The Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) had a well-packed, groomed wet snow base up high and a firm, groomed corn snow surface lower down. Like the groomed slopes at Kurobishi, it was easy to ski. A skier from Osaka, whom I rode the Riesen Quad with, told me, “I always follow read reports! I’ve been coming to Happo for nearly 50 years, and I’ve never seen this much snow at this time of year.”

The groomed southern route of Usagidaira (pictured) had a moderately-packed wet snow surface. Meanwhile, the ungroomed sections along the Alpen Quad and Kurobishi 3 Pair had medium-to-large, firm moguls marking the surface. Not only is there an impressive amount of snow on the slopes, but the base area is also much whiter compared to the same time last year.
