What accelerates snowmelt the most isn’t rain or intense sun, but rather warm winds. I spoke with an Alpen Quad staff member who shared, “The wind was strong over the weekend. On Saturday night, it was so intense I thought the roof might blow off!” Due to the fierce winds over the weekend, the snow depth at the top of the ski resort dropped drastically from 600 cm to 530 cm.

This morning the wind was only gently blowing, and high clouds covered the sky. The groomed Panorama Course (pictured) and Panorama Beginner Course featured soft spring corn snow surfaces right from the start. Though there were moments when the flat light made it hard to see the snow surface, the conditions made for easy turns and smooth gliding.

I enjoyed fast, fun runs on the groomed area along the Kurobishi Quad and on the Skyline Course (pictured), which each had moderately soft, granular snow surfaces. The Kitaone Traverse Cat Track, Sakkaa Wave, and Shirakaba Slopes had slushy corn snow bases. With no exposed brush or thin snow patches anywhere, it was a comfortable descent all the way to the bottom.

The ungroomed section along the Alpen Quad (pictured, background) had moderately soft, medium to large-sized moguls, while the area along the Kurobishi 3 Pair had a bumpy, uneven base. Although HAPPO PARKS and the Sakka 3 Triple, Kitaone 3 Pair, Shirakaba 2 Pair, and Nakiyama 2 Pair wrapped up their season on 3/23 (Sun.), Happo is still “fully open” and going strong!
