This morning the sky was fully covered in clouds, bringing flat light to the slopes. The bottom of Paradise had a slightly soft, groomed granular snow surface. I spoke with two visitors from Osaka and Niigata (pictured), who said, “We’ve used the Snownavi site before. It’s our first time at Madarao this season. We were thinking of checking out SAWA… wait, did it close yesterday?”

With the No. 13 lift closing on 3/20 (Thu., holiday) and the No. 11, 12, and 15 lifts finishing for the season yesterday, 3/23 (Sun.), the 13 courses near Tangram are now closed. With that, from today until the final day of operations on 3/30 (Sun.), 19 courses remain open. All parking areas are free, with the 900-space No. 7 Parking Lot (pictured, right) and the 150-space No. 8 Parking Lot being the most convenient options.

Like Paradise, the Champion (second photo), Shirakaba, and Utopia courses had groomed bases composed of softening granular snow early in the morning. By around 9 a.m., the groomed, granular snow surface layers of Traverse and Crystal (pictured) were softening even more, creating a loose, slushy surface.

Crystal remained skiable from the merger point with Traverse down to the junction with the Heidi access route. With both the No. 11 and No. 12 lifts closed, fewer skiers were on the run, allowing the surface to stay flat for longer. Since the connecting lift to Tangram has also stopped operating, those with a Mountain Pass will need to use their own vehicles to move between the two areas.
