While riding the Nagasaka Gondola this morning, the distant Togari Onsen Ski Resort was visible through a cloak of haze caused by the arrival of Asian Dust, though there were only occasional strong gusts of wind, and no disruptions to the lifts or gondola. The Uenotaira Slope (pictured) had a hard packed, groomed granular snow surface that had just begun to soften. On 3/29 (Sat.), the “Haruyama Matsuri” (spring mountain festival) will be held here.

Passing through the groomed Paradise Slope (pictured), with a soft and loose granular snow surface layer, I headed toward the Schneider Course. I met a skier from Hyogo Prefecture who shared, “I just had to ski today, so I hopped on the Shinkansen and came! The snow is getting softer and is a bit heavy, but it’s still great for skiing.” The first half of the Schneider Course had groomed, easy-to-ski spring snow, while the latter half featured soft moguls.

At the well-maintained snow park, a digger (pictured) told me, “The Uenotaira Snow Park will close on 3/30 (Sun.) and will be relocated to the Yamabiko C Course by mid-April. Also, on 3/30 (Sun.), we’ll be hosting ‘Onsen JAM’!” Additionally, the halfpipe’s final day of operation will be 3/30 (Sun.).

I ran into Sugimoto Demo from the Nozawa Onsen Ski School (pictured, far left background) who commented, “Thanks for always supporting us! The Hikage Slope is running fast today. As you can see, I’m coaching a group of young skiers, so it’s a tough lesson today!” The soft, slushy snow on the Hikage Slope made for fast and smooth riding conditions.
