While there are still some icy spots in shaded areas along the access roads after exiting the Joshinetsu Expressway, the roads are generally dry by mid-March, making driving to the resort easier. This morning, the Utopia Course (pictured) had well-packed, powder-like groomed wet snow, making for smooth, enjoyable skiing as I headed towards the Super Quad lift station.

The Champion (pictured) and Giant courses, like Utopia, featured firm, groomed wet snow with a powdery feel. Clumps of snow the size of golf balls were scattered across the surface, but they didn’t hinder skiing. My edges gripped firmly, allowing for smooth, confident carving and easy speed control.

I spoke with a couple from Chiba (pictured), who mentioned, “We’ve seen the Snownavi site before. Yesterday, we skied at Togari Onsen, and today, we’re skiing at Madarao until around noon. After that, we plan to have some Shinshu soba before heading home. The groomed slopes are really nice to ski on.” The Madarao FreeRidePark’s Mogul Course, located at the bottom of the Giant Slope, is closed for a remodel until 3/11 (Tue.), but the snow park itself is open and in good condition.

The Crystal Course (pictured), with its powder-like wet snow grooming, was softer than the firm Champion course. It offered an incredibly smooth and flat surface, making it exceptionally easy to ski on early in the morning. However, by around 10 a.m., after I finished my report, the surface had started to loosen up.
