Yesterday, 3/27 (Thu.), the Foehn phenomenon led to record-breaking March temperatures at observation points across Hokuriku, Kinki, and San’in. In Nagano, Ueda City saw a scorching +29.6°C—comparable to July temperatures—and ranking second highest in the entire country! And now, following that, the morning today brought light rain… And, as you can see, the vast, well-groomed slopes are completely empty!

The Rabbit Course (pictured) was fully groomed edge-to-edge, with a granular snow surface soaked with moisture. While the snow was soft and grippy, the glide was surprisingly smooth. With no crowds in sight, I had fun carving wide turns. The same conditions applied to the Wakaguri Central Slope, where I took full advantage of the extra-wide terrain to make more big, sweeping turns from edge to edge.

I met a man from Kanagawa (pictured, black poncho) who said, “I always check your reports! I run a club called the ‘Buddy Adventure Group’ in Shonan. Every March, we hold a kids’ telemark skiing camp in the Tsugaike Nature Park, but since there’s so much snow this year, we decided to host it at Hakunori instead.” One of the participating children added, “Today is the last day, but we’re going to enjoy it until the very end!” before charging into the cross course.

Let’s take a look back at earlier in the morning on the Kamoshika Course (pictured). In a typical season, the snow on this east-facing course and the upper part of the Highway Course would be the first to thin out and grow patchy, but this year, there’s no sign of that happening at all. If Hakunori operates as planned until 4/6 (Sun.), it will have the fourth-longest winter season in HAKUBAVALLEY, following Tsugaike, Goryu47, and Happo!
