Many ski resorts across Japan wrapped up their season at the end of March, but winter at Hakuba Happo-One still has more than a month to go! This morning, light wet snow was falling quietly across the upper slopes. A thin layer of moist new snow covered the moderately firm groomed granular base at the start of the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured), just enough to cover the grooming machine’s tracks

In the upper areas of the resort, the snow flurries were accompanied by shifting fog that sometimes turned the visibility completely white. On the groomed portion of the Usagidaira Slope, the top and mid-section (pictured) featured a firm base composed of a mix of wet snow and granular snow, while the lower section had a moderately firm granular base. The snow provided good edge grip, making for smooth and enjoyable turns.

The snow stopped around 9:30 a.m., revealing glimpses of the Northern Alps through the clouds. The area alongside the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) had a firm, groomed granular snow base with a surface that had begun to soften slightly, providing excellent glide. The Skyline Course had the same conditions, but was nearly empty, and I enjoyed a relaxing run free from the crowds.

The large, irregular moguls in the ungroomed area along the Alpen Quad (pictured) were composed of coarse granular snow that made for a challenging ride. In other news, the Usagidaira Terrace will host the OGASAKA SKI NEW MODEL SKI Demo Event from 4/4 (Fri.) to 4/6 (Sun.). During the event, a wide range of skis, from carving to freeride models, will be available for testing (free participation, ID required).
