Clouds gradually covered the early morning blue sky, and by around 10 a.m., light snow had begun to fall. “We’re here for a training camp with our school’s ski club. It’s so much fun!” was the comment from some students from Tokyo (pictured). The Nishidateyama Beginner Course had a firm, groomed powder snow surface (!) at the start, while the middle to lower sections featured a mix of wet and granular snow.

The Nishidateyama Takamagahara Slope (pictured, foreground) had a well-packed groomed powder base from top to bottom. Though the Nishidateyama Second Triple Lift is only 237m long, many skiers and snowboarders were seen lapping it, likely drawn by the excellent snow quality. Meanwhile, the frost-covered trees off in the distance near the summit of Higashidateyama made for a stunning view.

I ran into a father from Nara (pictured, far right), who commented, “Wait, aren’t you from Snownavi? We always read your reports!” He continued, “We came to pick up our son from his ski camp and decided to get some runs in. It’s hard to believe the season is ending with so much snow remaining.” Today marks the final day of operations for Sunvalley, Maruike, Hasuike, Giant, Higashidateyama, Nishidateyama, Hoppo Bunadaira, and Ichinose Yamanokami, and starting 4/1 (Tue.), Shiga Kogen will transition into its spring skiing season.

At Giant, the 68th Annual Shiga Kogen Junior Ski Tournament was underway today. I spoke with a dad from Saitama, who told me he was a fan of Snownavi and told the kids to smile for a photo. He also added, “These kids are members of a ski club team from Omachi City. The hard course conditions are tough—even for adults.” The fifth-grade competitors excitedly chimed in, “We’re nervous, but we’ll do our best!”
