Happo-one REPORT

2025.04.03400 cm / Snow & Clouds

The rain that was falling at the base turned to wet snow as I rode the gondola up. This morning, I met a skier (pictured, foreground) who told me, “I came because the forecast said it would be sunny, but it looks like that was off.” Thick fog rolled in and out across the mid to upper slopes throughout the morning.

On the groomed Riesen Slalom Course, the surface layer of slushy spring snow thickened as I skied down. The south-side route of Usagidaira (pictured) had about 1 cm of new wet snow on top of a moderately soft, groomed granular snow base. The ungroomed area along the Alpen Quad featured closely spaced medium to large-sized moguls.

The groomed run along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) had a light layer of fresh wet snow covering the spring snow base, creating a smooth, fast surface perfect for effortless turns. I watched as a “Smoke-Free Ambassador” (pictured, left), promoting the Smoke-Free Slopes initiative, gracefully carved their way down.

On the Skyline Course (pictured), a thin layer of damp new snow on top of the groomed, slushy spring snow surface led to increased friction and slower speeds. On the ungroomed sections of Skyline, soft shallow tracks and bumps marked the surface. By around 9 a.m., the snow had mostly stopped, and glimpses of sunlight began breaking through the clouds.
