Happo-one REPORT

2025.04.08390 cm / Sunny

This morning, I enlisted the cooperation of instructors from the Hakuba Happo-One Ski & Snowboard School. The school boasts an impressive lineup of five demo skiers (pictured), including National Demonstrator Junya Maruyama (second from left) and SAJ Demonstrator Takuto Toshida (third from left), as well as Ryo Yamamoto (fourth from left), Keisuke Maruyama (far left), and Kaede Mikasa (far right). Seeing them all together in one spot, even just standing, was a striking sight.

Of course, watching the demo skiers up close and in action was truly impressive. The Panorama Course this morning (pictured) had a hard packed, groomed granular snow surface thanks to radiative cooling. National Demonstrator Junya Maruyama (pictured) shared, “Even for us, the firm surface first thing in the morning was a bit intimidating. But once the top layer had started to soften by the second run, we were able to ski more dynamically.”

Our photo shoot took place amongst a cheerful and friendly atmosphere. When it was time to shoot a close-up of Mr. Toshida (pictured), Junya Maruyama called out, “You’re looking a bit stiff—come on, smile!” prompting a burst of laughter from everyone. The group also shared, “We’ll be offering lessons through the final day of the ski season on 5/6 (Tue., holiday). We look forward to welcoming you!”

After we finished, Ryo Yamamoto (pictured) and Keisuke Maruyama stopped by to say thank you, and added, “We’re heading over to the Kurobishi Slope for some training now.” Incidentally, Ryo Yamamoto’s “Expert Moguls Special” session will be held on weekends from 4/12 (Sat.) to 4/27 (Sun.). It was warm, and after just one run on the moderately softened, groomed granular snow base along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) around 9 a.m., I was already starting to break a sweat.
