The seasonal drama that begins with the first snowfall and concludes on the final day of operation is down to just the final two weeks. This morning at the base of the resort, cherry blossoms were beginning to bloom in areas such as the Hakuba Ski Jumping Stadium and Oide Park. First thing this morning, the Panorama Course (pictured) had a groomed, granular spring snow base with the outermost surface just starting to soften.

With a light southerly breeze blowing and the sun quickly pushing up the temperature, my second run on the Panorama Course already featured classic spring slush conditions, with a thick surface layer of soft, granular snow. By the way, on 4/26 (Sat.), a clean-up event called “Gelände Clean Act.” will be held at the ski resorts around Hakuba Village. At Happo, it will take place on the Sakka Slope, and the first 150 participants will receive an original GREEN HAKUBA T-shirt (registration starts at 8:40 a.m.).

The groomed portion of the Usagidaira Slope (pictured) and the area along the Kurobishi Quad (fourth photo) both had groomed bases with a thick surface layer of soft granular snow right from the start. Some skiers from Osaka and Shiga, whom I met on the slopes, told me, “We always read your reports! Thanks to last night’s rain, the skis are gliding really well today.”

I also spoke with a woman from Chiba (pictured), who commented, “I always follow your updates! Yesterday was crowded since it was Sunday, but today it’s much quieter, the weather is beautiful, and everything is just perfect!” While the eastern sky was slightly hazy, it was clear and blue to the west, offering stunning views of the Hakuba Sanzan (the three main peaks of Hakuba) and the Northern Alps.
