Hakuba Happo-One will head into Golden Week with 8 lifts, including the gondola, and 5 slopes still open. Although yesterday’s rain left the snow surface looking a bit dirty this morning, the slopes that remain open still have plenty of snow. I ran into a ski patroller who told me, “Thanks for your hard work! We’ve had a good snow year, and will confidently be able to stay open through the final scheduled day of the season on 5/6 (Tue., holiday). Come out and enjoy the final few days!”

As you can see, even the lower section of the southern route on Usagidaira—where the snow typically melts quickly—still has a solid snowpack. Both here and on the Panorama Course, the edges of my skis sank deep into the soft, slushy corn snow, but it was still easy and enjoyable to carve turn after turn. A skier from Shiga Prefecture (pictured, far left) shared, “I always check your updates. I’ve been skiing laps via the Alpen Quad this morning.”

Another group of three from Tokyo greeted me saying, “We always check your updates! We’re big Hakuba Happo fans.” The skier on the far left added with a sheepish smile, “But today is both my first and last day skiing at Happo this season.” The groomed run along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured) was covered in smooth, slushy corn snow that made it easy to pick up speed and enjoy cruising.

By around 9:30 a.m., the snow on the southern route of Usagidaira (pictured) started to feel noticeably heavier. The ungroomed areas along the Alpen Quad and Kurobishi 3 Pair lifts featured medium to large-sized moguls that had softened nicely. Meanwhile, the roads down in the village are now completely free of snow and ice, making it safe to drive with summer tires.
