In yesterday’s report, I mentioned that strong winds had kept the upper lifts closed for more than 3 days since around noon on 12/23 (Fri.), but things finally opened up today. In the ungroomed areas of Usagidaira and Kurobishi, there was between 30 to 40 cm of untouched snow with very low moisture content, thanks to the continuing cold temperatures.

When I inserted my tape measure into the steep slope alongside the Kurobishi 3 Pair (pictured), it went in all the way to the 40cm mark without any resistance. The snow surface itself was marked with ripples from the strong winds that had been blowing over the last few days. The glorious powder slopes spread out before me, and while the snow seemed a bit heavy at times, I thoroughly enjoyed the feeling of floating on powder with very little sinking!

Groomed areas such as the Panorama Course (pictured), the southern portion of Usagidaira, the area to skiers’ right along the Kurobishi Quad 2, and the Riesen Slalom Course had moderately soft powder snow surfaces. My edges firmly gripped the snow well, and I was able to make comfortable and controlled turns.

A weak northerly wind was blowing on the upper portion of the resort, and fog was moving in and out repeatedly across the area. In the ungroomed area entered from the middle of Skyline Course’s forest road track (pictured), there was a soft layer of snow that was about 40 cm deep. The wind did not seem to have affected this area much, and the snow here was the lightest I found all day. I met a family from Aichi Prefecture at the boarding pont for the Skyline 2 Pair who told me, “We love your site! The powder on the upper portion of the ski resort was great!”
