It has only been four days since the season started at Sanosaka, but the snowpack has steadily increased during that time, and this morning there were no bushes in sight, which means that the snow is now sufficient to completely cover the underbrush. As for the weather, it was calm and sunny with lots of clouds. I spoke with the head of the Kamoshika Snowboard School (pictured, right), who told me, “I love your site! We look forward to working with you again this season. Today we’re training our new instructors.”

I was pretty excited even before I made my first runs, because of the perfect powder snow that squeaked as I walked across the groomed snow surface. The well-maintained carving slope (pictured) was moderately firm and in excellent condition. A skier from Tokyo whom I had a conversation with said, “I always check your site. I am happy that my first run of the season was here at Hakuba Sanosaka after it was closed for the last 2 years!”

A snowboarder from Itoigawa City in Niigata Prefecture (pictured) told me that this was their second of back-to-back days boarding at Sanosaka. They also commented on the great weather today and mentioned that they were able to carve some incredibly fun first tracks this morning. Conditions were fantastic on both the wide-groomed Paradise Slope (pictured) and Paradise Downhill.

Days like this are perfect for taking photos of Lake Aoki, so I decided to head toward the Lake Down Course, but unfortunately had to give up when I found myself buried up to my waist in more than 100cm of untouched snow. Later on I spoke with a family from Tokyo who told me they love the Snownavi site, and went on to say, “We usually ski at Goryu, but but also enjoy Hakuba Sanosaka since the slopes are empty and easy to ski, and because the lift tickets are a great value.”
