Happy New Year! This morning, strong intermittent gusts of winds blowing in from the west caused occasional blizzard-like conditions and reduced visibility. The upper portion of Route 1, as well as Routes 4, 5, and 6, were in good condition with 2 to 5 cm of light, fresh snow on top of well-packed groomed powder snow surfaces. On the upper portion of Route 1 there was around 20 to 25 cm of fluffy new snow accumulated on the sides of the course.

It was a surprisingly slow start to the day, and only around 9:30 did the middle of the ski resort, including the area around the gondola summit station, begin to bustle with activity. The groomed lower half of Route 1 was hard-packed. On the upper half, the 15 to 20cm of new snow higher up had been pressed and compacted into a bump, uneven surface, but towards the bottom, less snow meant a more even surface and easier turns.

47PARKS is now open, and the items currently on tap are: halfpipe (pictured), 5m kicker, 5m kicker, 6m kicker, box, box, pipe, double-tiered pipe, and 7m round rail (in that order). The halfpipe, with its soft snow, was in good condition. The well-maintained kickers were in good shape, and I noticed a lot of people giving them a try and continuing on to the boxes.

Today, a large prize drawing was held at 10:30 as part of a New Year Event that took place in front of the Iimori Rest House. Tickets for the drawing, which were sold for JPY100 each, went on sale at 9:30 and sold out within 45 minutes. The fantastic assortment of prizes included a 32-inch high-definition LCD TV, air purifier, coffee maker, massage machine, android tablet, medicated bath salts, toys, and assorted sweets. Starting at 12:00, a snow treasure hunt (JPY100 entry fee) is scheduled to be held in the Family Land Iimori kid’s area.
