Since the gondola was running late this morning, I took the Nakiyama 3 Triple, which started on time at 8:00 a.m., to the Happo Riesen Quad in order to access the upper portion of the ski resort. However, a strong, cold northerly wind was blowing in the areas above the top of Riesen, and the Alpen Quad, Kurobishi 2 Quad, Panorama Pair, and Kokusai 3 Pair were all out of service.

Occasional strong gusts of wind picked up snow and made it difficult to see the snow surface. However, the top half of the Riesen Slalom Course (photo) was in good condition with 1 to 3 cm of fresh snow atop the well-packed, groomed powder snow surface. The Usuba Slope, which is covered in a mixture of natural and artificial snow, was hard packed, but this morning’s thin layer of fresh snow sitting on the surface made it easy to ski.

Strong winds also blew from time to time on the Nakiyama Slope (pictured). The Public Course, with around 2 to 3 cm of dry man-made snow on top of a firmly-groomed powder snow surface, and the Shirakaba Slope, with a packed-powder surface, were also easy to ski. There was sufficient snow cover on both areas, with no bushes protruding from the snow.

The roads accessing the ski resort, Route 148 and the Olympic Road, are well plowed every day, but were icy and slippery this morning. In other news, fireworks displays are scheduled on the Nakiyama Slope starting at 20:00 on 1/21 (Sat.), 1/28 (Sat.), 2/4 (Sat.), 2/11 (Sat), and 2/17 (Fri). On these, the last one on 2/17 (Sat.) will be part of the 53rd Annual Happo-One Fire Festival, which kicks off at 7:30 p.m.!
