Despite quite a few clouds in the sky, the sun was shining for the first time in a while, and it was a perfect day to be on the slopes, with excellent visibility and superb snow quality thanks to the continuing cold temperatures! Looking at the Riesen Slalom and Panorama courses from the gondola, I could see the beautiful corduroy pattern on the surface that showed the groomers’ enthusiastic preparation for the 3-day weekend.

I spoke with the owner of For-Tune (pictured, left), who said to me, “Today I’m trying out Hayashi Wax’s ‘For-Tune Special’ and it’s fantastic! If you need anything, come see me on the basement floor of the gondola base station.” Another skier I met told me, “The first runs this morning on Riesen were really nice.”

On the upper portion of the ski resort, there were flurries of fine snow being carried by the westerly wind. I had a brief conversation with a couple of families from Kyoto and Kanagawa (pictured), and was told, “We came out today to take advantage of the 3-day weekend. The kids are making their Happo debut today!” The first half of Riesen Grat had a moderately firm powder snow surface, while the steep slope on the second half was covered with medium to large moguls.

I also met 4 people from Kanagawa Prefecture at the foot of Grat, and was told, “We love your site! We are staying at Bergtour Marukita for the next 3 days and 2 nights thanks to a friend’s recommendation. The groomers are in great condition today.” From Olympic Course II to and on to the Sakka Slope, the groomed powder snow was nice and firm, while the Shirakaba Slope had a firm, wet snow surface.
