This last 3-day January weekend turned out to be sunnier than that of the average year. However, this morning, strong winds were blowing across the upper portion of the resort, causing the Alpen Quad, Kurobishi 2 Quad, Grat Quad, and Skyline 2 Pair to stay closed. Because of this, a lot of those getting off the gondola and Happo Riesen Quad headed for the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured).

The top half of Riesen (pictured) was beautifully groomed, with well-packed powder snow! As you can see in the photo, digging your edges into the surface sent up large plumes of powdery snow. On the Usuba Slope (first photo) at the end of Riesen, the firmly-groomed surface was composed of wet snow, but was still easy to ski and make comfortable, controlled turns on.

The Panorama Course (pictured) was groomed widely and in good condition, with a firm powder snow surface similar to the top to mid portion of Riesen. Later on around 8:30 a.m., strong winds began to blow in the area around the Usagidaira Terrace, and by 9:00 a.m., the gondola, Panorama Pair, and Kokusai 3 Pair (pictured) were also out of service.

Both the Central Course and Shirakaba Slope (pictured) were groomed with well-packed wet snow. I was greeted by five visitors (pictured) from Tokyo, Kanagawa Prefecture, and Hakuba Village, one of whom told me, “I love your site. The groomers are in fantastic condition today. My girlfriend (pictured, far right) is celebrating her birthday today.” Happy birthday!
