This morning, heavy snow was falling, and strong intermittent gusts of winds from the north were blowing across the middle and upper portions of the resort, and just like yesterday, Usagidaira, Kurobishi, Grat, and Skyline were temporarily closed. The good news is that the Japanese archipelago will soon see stable weather thanks to an incoming high-pressure system, and if the lifts on the upper portion of the mountain don’t end up running today, and all of this fresh snow is preserved until tomorrow morning, it may be the perfect chance to enjoy clear skies and smooth powder.
[Usagidaira]
The groomed Panorama Course (pictured) had a moderately firm powder snow surface topped with 10 to 15 cm of fresh snow, and the evenly-groomed surface combined with the new fluffy powder made for some fantastic runs. Even at this elevation, visibility was sometimes impaired by blowing snow, but it wasn’t enough to affect my skiing.

There was an ungroomed area on the steep slope (pictured) at the bottom half of the south side of the Panorama Course, which had between 30 to 40 cm of fresh snow. I noticed that some skiers were heading to the Central Course in search of fresh snow as well. Even the Olympic Course II had about 40 cm of new snow, and I was able to enjoy some great powder runs there without bottoming out!

On the Sakka Slope, where the groomed surface was composed of hardpacked wet snow, the 1 to 5 cm of new snow covering it made the conditions a little more forgiving. In other news, this year’s batch of the unfiltered, raw sake ‘Hakuba Happo Kurobishi Origarami Muroka Nama Genshu’ is set to be released on 1/12 (Thurs.). Tasting will be available at the Mount shop at the base of the resort starting at 3:00 p.m. on that day.
