On this, the third consecutive day of clear skies, the cold temperatures had eased and there was almost no wind, making it a comfortable day for skiing and snowboarding. Because of the warm daytime temperatures of the last two days, I was surprised to see that there was still powder snow on the upper part of the resort. If you dug your edges hard enough, you could send up clouds of fluffy “snow smoke.”

The groomed southern portion of Usagidaira (first photo) and the area along the Kurobishi 2 Quad (pictured) had excellent, moderately firm powder snow conditions! The steep ungroomed slopes along the Alpen Quad and Kurobishi 3 Pair were covered with medium to large sized, hard, irregular moguls.

I crossed paths with a couple from Tokyo (pictured), who told me, “We love your site. We boarded at Cortina two days ago and were at Happo yesterday and now today, too. We took a late New Year’s vacation and are in full snowboarding mode now. We’re planning to go to Madarao tomorrow for the next part of our holiday.” The groomed part of the Skyline Course, as with other areas, was easy to ski due to the firm powder snow surface.

The surface of the Kitaone Traverse Cat Track was composed of firmly-groomed wet snow, but the last part of the course was closed due to avalanche danger. The well-packed groomed wet snow surface of the Sakka Slope (pictured) had a powdery feel. Tomorrow, 1/14 (Sat.), the regular Saturday HAPPO SUMMIT MUSIC even (*starting at 1:30 p.m., free of charge) will be held at the Usagidaira Terrace!
