REPORT

This last weekend, it was so warm on both Saturday and Sunday that it was hard to believe it was January. This morning, the cold began to creep back, and the trees in the middle to upper portion of the ski area were covered in rime ice. Fine snow was falling, and a weak, but chilly westerly wind was blowing across the resort. A skier I met at the gondola station told me, “I was worried because it was raining until pretty late last night at the foot of the mountain, but I’m glad that it ended up turning to snow.”

There were 2 to 3 cm of slightly damp new snow on top of Route 2’s hard, groomed wet snow surface. The balance between the cushioning provided by the fresh snow and the very skiable surface made for some fun runs. I was impressed by the speedy turns I saw being performed by an instructor from the HAKUBA47 Snowboard School (pictured) and others.

I headed back up before making my way down towards the lower part of Route 8 (4th photo). Here, the groomed surface laying under 1 to 2 cm of slightly damp new snow was moderately firm and easy to ski, and the fog did not impair visibility. The ungroomed Route 3 had about 3 cm of fresh snow covering the surface that was interspersed with medium to large size, firm moguls.

As on Route 8, the moderately firm groomed surfaces of Routes 5 and 6 were also good for linking comfortable turns. On the well-packed, groomed granular snow surface of the lower part of Route 1, there was another 1 to 2 cm of fresh, slushy snow on top, but it didn’t cause any noticeable braking.
