CHAVATY HAKUBA, which held its grand opening in the spring of 2022, is open daily during the winter (*8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.). I spoke with staff members (pictured), who told me, “We recommend the Hakuba limited-edition Kuromoji chai and scones!” There are other items available that are portable and convenient for take-away, such as bottled iced tea lattes and original tumblers.

The new snow falling overnight last night totaled about 3 cm at the summit of Iwatake. The groomed snow on the South Slope (pictured), which was a mixture of fresh snow and fine-grained granular snow, had a soft surface layer covering a firm base, and my skis slid well on it. In addition to snow skates (pictured), any equipment that has edges and can be fitted with a leash to prevent runaway gear can be used on all runs at Iwatake.

The snow on the top part of the groomed Sunny Valley Course (pictured) was reasonably firm and easy to ski. The ground that had been exposed in the middle to last part of the course was now mostly covered over thanks to a combination of last night’s snowfall and artificial snow. The East Slope and View C and D were pleasantly skiable with 1 to 3 cm of light, fresh snow on top of a moderately firm, groomed wet snow surface.

Backing up a bit, first thing this morning I spoke with some staff from the Patagonia Hakuba / Outlet. They thanked me for my reports and told me that they were out to ski a few runs before the shop opened up. The mentioned that they still have a great selection of winter items in stock. Also, as you can see, the trees on the Mountain Side of the resort were covered in white rime ice.
