Hakuba Norikura REPORT

2023.01.27215cm / Snowy

This morning, I had a conversation with five people from Osaka (pictured), who told me that they loved the Snownavi site and that today they were practicing for the Osaka Skiing Skills Championships which will be held Saturday and Sunday. That event also serves as the Osaka qualifying round for the 60th Annual ALL Japan Ski Technical Championships, a competition that effectively determines the top skiers in Japan. So, Hakunori is the setting for the first chapter in a story that will continue at Happo on 3/9 (Thurs.), when the first day of the qualifying round begins.

There had been snow flurries during the morning, but they soon stopped, and the sky grew calm yet remained cloudy. Both the Highway (pictured) and Kamoshika courses had about 2 cm of light, fresh snow on top of the firmly groomed powder snow surface, and I was able to execute controlled comfortable turns. While riding the No. 3 High-Speed Pair, I couldn’t take my eyes off of the technical turns at speed made by skiers who presumably were going to be competing in the upcoming competition.

The Wakaguri Central Slope (pictured) and Wakaguri Forest Course had moderately firm, groomed powder snow with around 2cm of light, fresh snow on top. I saw quite a few beginner-level international visitors skiing cautiously on both courses. In other news, the Rabbit Course (pictured, background), which has been closed since 1/10 (Tue.), seems like it should be able to reopen soon!

The ungroomed portion of the Highway Course was covered with 20 to 25 cm of fluffy new snow. Two people from Tokyo (pictured), who were hiking up from the top of the No. 3 High-Speed Pair, called out to me, “We love your site! We’re not heading to the backcountry, we’re just going up a little and then skiing down via the self-responsibility area.”
