Hakuba Norikura REPORT

2023.01.29230cm / Cloudy

The No. 10 Pair Lift was closed all day during yesterday’s heavy snowfall. That meant that expectations were high for the Sky View Course today, where copious amounts of fresh powder from the night before remained untouched. This morning I spoke with a skier from Shiga Prefecture (pictured), who told me that they are a fan of the Snownavi site. They went on to say, “I was at Cortina on the powder day last Thursday (1/26), but seeing that crowd, I decided to come out to Hakunori today.”

The line for the No. 9 Pair, which opened at 8:30, had the longest line I have ever seen waiting for the lift to begin. And as announced on the official Facebook page last night, the No. 10 Pair Lift (pictured) got going at 8:40, 20 minutes earlier than the usually scheduled time. Visitors in the line and on the lift seemed to be super excited even before they started skiing on the smooth slopes (pictured) spreading out before them.

The woman who carved the first tracks on the Sky View Slope (pictured), said, “I love your site! This morning at my accommodation, I asked to have my breakfast served early, ate in a rush, and dashed out the door and up to the boarding area for the No. 9 Pair Lift.” The amount of new snow accumulated on the slope was more than 50 cm! It was perfect powder that had been slightly packed down by the wind, making it even easier to float on the surface!

The expansive Sky View Slope was filled with tracks in a matter of minutes. That meant that the next target for those in search of powder was the Self-Responsibility Area on the west side of the No. 10 Pair Lift (pictured). After hiking up along the border between Hakuba Norikura and Hakuba Cortina and reaching my destination, I saw people dropping into the deep powder zone one after another. It was an INCREDIBLE DAY at Hakunori today!
