Dry snow was falling on a light northerly wind. The off-piste area Urakuro (pictured), which starts on the Northern Alps side of the mountain from the disembarkation point of the Kurobishi 3 Pair, is one of Happo’s most difficult ungroomed steep slopes with a maximum slope angle of 31 and an average of 27 degrees. The amount of fresh snow that had accumulated between last night to this morning was a respectable 25 to 30cm

The ungroomed slopes had been reset by the fresh accumulation, erasing yesterday’s tracks, and the uneven underlying base was moderately firm for the most part, though some areas were harder than others. While the powder along Kurobishi 3 was tracked out pretty quickly, the competition on Urakuro was low. I took my time enjoying laps on the silky smooth, fresh snow.

It was moderately firm packed powder conditions on the groomed snow throughout HAPPO PARKS (pictured). However, the roughly 1cm of new snow that topped things off caused some resistance, making it difficult to get up to speed on the approaches to the kickers and spines. On the banks, I caught sight of some skiers sending making epic turns and sending up spectacular sprays with each one.

Let’s go back to the start of the day on the Usagidaira Slope. I spoke with two residents of Hakuba Village (pictured) who were checking the ungroomed area along the Alpen Quad. They told me, “We love your site! We got a lot of new snow since last night.” The snow surface was slightly uneven in the area where large bumps had formed along the Alpen Quad.
