It was quite the blizzard out on the slopes. The strong northerly winds made the dry snow fall with great force, and the fog made it difficult to see the subtleties of the snow surface. Based on the weather forecast, most people probably weren’t expecting such heavy snowfall, and the “powder festival” atmosphere that was ongoing through the weekend was replaced with a calm energy typical of a weekday in January.

I spoke with a skier from Tokyo (pictured), who told me that he was a fan of the Snownavi site, and that he was skiing in Cortina for three days from Saturday to today. He mentioned that he partook in the aforementioned powder festival yesterday, but that there was plenty of snow again today. The real snow started in the morning, so there wasn’t much difference between the amount of fresh snow on the groomed part of Itadaira (about 10cm) and the ungroomed parts of the sides of the course (about 15cm).

The Ipponmatsu Course and Hiedayama Rinkan Course were in excellent condition, featuring 3 to 4 cm of light, fresh snow, on top of moderately firm, groomed powder snow surfaces. The Ikenota Slope (pictured), which had been groomed just prior to the start of business, had moderately packed, groomed powder snow and a thin layer of fresh snow topping things off. My skis slid well, and I was able to generate good speed in both conditions.

Going back to around 8:00 a.m., it was bright outside, and there were only a few flakes of snow falling. I met a skier from Australia (pictured), who said, “I’m staying 6 weeks here and am enjoying the HAKUBA VALLEY to the fullest. Hakuba’s powder snow is the best!”
