The resort was quiet, and the weather was calm with almost no wind on this Friday before a weekend full of events, including the SMITH DEMO CARAVAN (2/4 & 2/5), CHANMERO FREERIDE (2/5), HAPPO SUMMIT MUSIC (2/4, 13:30〜), and the first night of 5 consecutive weeks of fireworks (2/4, 20:00〜). In the midst of continued cold temperatures, fine, dry snow was falling as I left the summit station of the gondola.

The area above the Usagidaira Slope was shrouded in thick fog, and there were only a few people on the Alpen Quad. In fact, a partrolman (pictured) informed me that the Grat Quad would be closed all day due to poor visibility, and most of the visitors who got off the Gondola and Riesen Quad headed for the Riesen Slalom and Panorama courses.

The Panorama Course (pictured) and the southern portion of Usagidaira were in excellent condition with moderately firm groomed powder snow surfaces. I found it easy to set my edges and link controlled, comfortable turns. I overheard skiers having conversations like, “What do you say we do another run here?” “Sounds great!”

The Panorama Forest Road (pictured) and the Olympic Course II were both groomed with packed-powder surfaces and generally in good condition, although there were a few spots where the snow felt slightly hard. On Omusubi, where the Chanmero Freeride will be held the day after tomorrow, gates No. 1 and 2 were open today.
