There are about 70 pairs of goggles and 15 helmets on hand to test out free of charge, and each can be borrowed for about 30 minutes. (*ID required) I spoke with a skier from Shiga Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “I love Snownavi. I also check your reports during my lunch break and come here every weekend to ski. I still love my SMITH goggles and helmet, but I’m going to try out the latest versions now.”

Now let’s talk about the slopes. It was a windless morning, and the snow that was falling lightly around 8:00 a.m. gained intensity some 30 minutes later. The groomed Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) had a firm powder snow surface, and I observed skiers and boarders flying down the mountain here, one after another. I chatted with a couple from Niigata Prefecture who told me that it was their first time visiting Hakuba in winter and that they were impressed by the beautiful scenery and how different it was from summer.

I was able to ski at a good speed along the Kurobishi 2 Quad (pictured) and on the southern route of Usagidaira, where there was 1 to 2 cm of fresh dry snow topping off the groomed packed-powder surface. There were hard medium to large-sized moguls along the Alpen Quad. I’m appreciative of all the people who greeted me and spoke with me as I was out working on this report. Thank you very much!
