Yesterday, the temperature rose steadily during the day at the base of the mountain, and as of 14:00, the road sign along the Olympic Road (near Sun Sun Park Hakuba) showed a reading of +1℃. Despite the fact that it didn’t feel much colder overnight and into this morning, the resort received a significant snowfall, and the officially announced amount of new snow around the Usagidaira Terrace was a 32cm, which exceeded expectations.

When I personally measured the amount of new snow along the Kurobishi 3 Pair, I found a full 40cm of fresh, fluffy powder snow of the highest quality. I caught up with a group of participants (pictured) in today’s Chanmero Freeride, who greeted me with “Good morning!,” and added that they hoped the thick fog would dissipate soon. Indeed, a thick blanket of fog covered the middle to upper portion of the ski resort.

I spoke with a local Hakuba Village resident’s father who said, “I love the Snownavi site. Oddly, the parking lot was full, but the slopes don’t feel very crowded.” It seems that many visitors were concentrated in the lower portion of the resort, perhaps to avoid the fog. (*Incidentally, there was powder snow in the lower portion of the resort, as well as the upper!) Even in the well-maintained HAPPO PARKS (“NATURES”), which was below the clouds, the crowd was sparse.

As for that all-important powder, Sodeguro (pictured) and the area along the Alpen Quad were almost completely reset with with about 40cm of fluffy, fresh snow, and runs there were very enjoyable, even with the poor visibility! Because the snow was of a light quality, I did find myself hitting some of the large surface bumps below the new snow, but that itself was fun. The powder was of a quality that had me skiing at a level above what I’m usually capable of.
