It was a fantastic day for skiing. It was relatively warm during the daytime both yesterday (+2°C in front of JR Hakuba Station) and the day before, but this morning the cold temperatures had returned thanks to overnight radiative cooling. Thanks to the brisk weather, the snow surface in front of Usagidaira Terrace made a perfect powder squeak as I walked across it before putting on my skis. The wind wasn’t noticeable on Usagidaira or the Kurobishi Slope but was gusting relatively strongly from the west on the upper portion of the ski resort.
[Riesen Grat Course]
I enjoyed pleasant turns and the incredible views of Mt. Goryu, Kashimayari, and the Hakuba Sanzan (three major Hakuba peaks) from Riesen Grat (pictured), which had a moderately firm, groomed powder snow surface. In other news, the TOYO TIRES FWT QUALIFIER 4* HAKUBA 2023 is set to take place in the alpine areas of Happo sometime between tomorrow and 2/10 (Fri.). (*Which day the competition actually takes place will depend on weather and snow conditions.)
[Riesen Grat Course]
There were relatively firm, medium to large-sized moguls on the ungroomed areas on the second half of Grat, along the Alpen Quad, and on the first half of the Olympic Course II. Elsewhere, there were perfect, groomed packed powder snow conditions along the Kurobishi 2 Quad and the southern portion of Usagidaira, the Panorama Course, the Panorama forest road, the Sakka Slope, Sakka Wave, and all the way down to the base!
[Sakka Slope]
The top half of the groomed Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) had a moderately firm, powder snow surface, while the Usuba Slope at the end of the run was groomed powder snow with a firmer finish. The skiers’ left side of Usuba was topped off with a bit of artificial snow but was still easy to ski. Riesen, being one of Happo’s top courses, was crowded with people early in the morning, even on this weekday.
