The snow that fell yesterday was associated with the passage of a low-pressure system off the Pacific Ocean coast and caused heavy snow in the central and southern parts of Nagano Prefecture. That caused a number of road closures, including the Chuo Expressway between the Hachioji IC and Nakatsugawa IC and the Nagano Expressway between the Okaya JCT and Azumino IC, as well as some sections of National Route 19 and 20. This morning, however, the weather was mild and clear (Mt. Goryu pictured).

The conditions that caused yesterday’s snowfall typically do not produce much accumulation at Happo. And although it is true that not much snow accumulated overnight, the 24-hour snowfall total was 20 to 30 cm, which is more than usual. The groomed steep slopes of Kurobishi and Uraguro had a healthy cover of fresh, fluffy snow on top of the uneven but soft base!

Today was the grand opening of HAPPO PARKS, where the freshly pressed snow complimented by the well-built elements! I spoke with a snowboarder who commented, “It’s pretty quiet on the slopes at the moment. I bet it has something to do with the highway closures.” Tomorrow the park’s opening event, “MUGEN LINE,” will start at 9:00 a.m., with free samples of REDBULL and a riding skills demonstration by the members of the HACHI CREW.

Incidentally, the 20 cm of fresh snow on the ungroomed portion of the Kitaone 3 Slope (third photo, left side) was also very nice. The groomed areas along the Kurobishi 2 Quad (pictured), on the Usagidaira Course, and on the Skyline Course were in perfect condition with soft powdery snow, and I was able to link controlled, comfortable turns!
