2023.02.15290cm / Snow Clouds

The cold had intensified and plenty of fresh snow had fallen, so today was time for a “Powder Festival!” The 2nd Quad had a long queue before opening but ended up starting operation about 10 minutes late, while the 4th Pair got going 5 minutes early at 8:55 a.m. Heavy snow had been falling since yesterday until the early morning hours, and by now had weakened, though fog cloaked the slopes.

I could feel the moderately firm powder snow underfoot on the groomed Hiedayama One Course before passing through the rime ice-caked tunnel leading to the Hiedayama Course 3 (pictured). There I found 25 to 30 cm of fresh snow whose surface had been slightly packed by the strong north wind, which actually helped in staying afloat. I thoroughly enjoyed floating across the surface of the snow without hitting bottom!

The snow continued to fall during the day yesterday, and there was between 40 and 50cm of new snow in the deepest spots. The wind chill was so cold that I couldn’t feel my fingers as I used my camera, but the snow quality was the best so far this February, and giant rooster tails of snow (pictured) shot high behind you when you set your edges hard enough!
[Hiedayama Course 3]

The ungroomed Hiedayama 1, 2, and 3 courses, as well as the Itadaira Course were filled with tracks within 30 to 40 minutes, and the search for powder shifted to other areas as a line began to form for the 5th Pair and the 3rd Quad, which had been delayed in starting operation. Even in the ungroomed area on the side of the Ikenota Slope (pictured) had 30 to 40 cm of fluffy, fresh snow! It was moderately soft powder snow conditions on the Ikenoata Slope, where the groomers were hard at work up until the morning opening.
