Pilar, located by the off-ramp of the Alpen Quad, is open daily from 9:00 a.m. The “Juicy Chicken” sandwich (pictured, ¥1,500) is a delicious combination of juicy chicken coated in a crispy fried batter, vegetables, and aurora sauce. (The French bun is also very tasty.) This morning I enjoyed mine with coffee (¥300 until 10:00 a.m.).

Temperatures dropped all the way down to -11°C at Usagidaira this morning, but there was almost no wind, so it did not feel as cold as the numbers indicated. There was 3 to 5 cm of light, fresh snow on the hard packed, groomed wet snow surface of the Riesen Slalom course (pictured) and on the southern route of Usagidaira. As the surface snow was shaved off by the edges of skis and snowboards, hard patches began to appear, making it difficult to set my edges.

There were occasional patches of fog at Usagidaira, where there was a large contingent of skiers training for the 60th ALL Japan Ski Technical Championships. The weather eventually improved, and blue skies started to appear around 9:30 a.m., with the snow coming to an end around 10:00. The Shirakaba Slope had a firmly-groomed, wet snow surface.

I spoke with two skiers from Toyama Prefecture and Azumino City (pictured), who said, “We love your site! We were classmates at our junior high school in Saku City. We met again by chance at an event at Hakuba47 and started skiing together.” The Kurobishi Slope was in great shape, with well-packed, groomed wet snow, and I enjoyed carving nice, fresh tracks on the 3 cm of new snow that topped things off.
