It was a beautiful day for skiing and snowboarding, with clear skies and no wind. The Panorama Course (pictured) was groomed with a “powdery” wet snow surface that was moderately firm and very easy to ski! It was easy to set my edges, my skis slid well across the snow, and I was able to execute turns wherever and however I wanted on the super wide slopes.

The area along the Kurobishi Quad (pictured), the southern route of Usagidaira, the central part of the Skyline Course, and the upper portion of the ski resort were every bit as easy to ski as the Panorama Course, and I found myself wanting to repeat runs on each course. I’d love to tell you it was powder snow, but when I picked up the snow and checked it, I found it was granular snow with fine particles. In either case, it really was easy to ski!

I caught up with a skier (pictured) from Kobe, in Hyogo Prefecture, who told me, “I love your site and really enjoy reading your reports.” As I skied down toward SakKa, a section of snow on the south-facing aspect of the Kitaone forest road was rather slushy. On the Shirakaba Slope, I found hard, wet snow.

Today there was no wind at all from around dawn. At about 6:40 a.m., the morning sun first dyed the ridges of the Ushiro-Tateyama Mountain Range red before gradually changing color and illuminating the entire Hakuba Happo-One Ski Resort. Although the temperature dipped all the way down to -10℃ due to overnight radiative cooling, it actually didn’t feel that cold and I was able to sit back and admire the incredible scenery. By the way, the Hakuba Happo-One Fire Festival will be held at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Nakiyama!
