At the IWATAKE WHITE PARK, you can take pictures with a variety of snow sculptures such as “Thumbs up!” (pictured, left) and “Ice Table” (pictured, right). There I spoke with four visitors from Ishikawa Prefecture (pictured), who told me, “This is our first visit to IWATAKE. We haven’t even skied once since we arrived (lol).”

It was a pleasant overcast Saturday with cold, but manageable temperatures. Both the South (pictured) and East slopes had groomed, wet snow slopes where my skis slid well. In the morning, there were many skiers on the South Slope, taking advantage of the wide area to make sweeping turns. There were some clumps of snow that formed on the surface towards the end of the run, but they weren’t particularly problematic.

VIEW C and VIEW D (pictured) opened more than 10 before the scheduled time. The well-packed, wet groomed snow on both courses provided good conditions for controlled, comfortable turns. The Sunny Valley Course was groomed with harder wet snow, and the surface of the run towards the bottom of the course was already softening up early in the day.

The dog run at Iwatake is big enough for even large dogs to play to their heart’s content. A man from Shiga Prefecture (pictured), who came to Iwatake with his dog Yuu, told me, “I came to Iwatake because I wanted to ski and it was nice that Yuu could play, too. I’m using a lift ticket that I received as a gift in return for making a furusato nozei (hometown tax) payment to Hakuba Village.” There is another large dog run at the beginning of the currently-closed North Slope. (Both dog runs are free of charge.)
