Wet snow was falling silently as I got off the gondola this morning. I spoke with a group of Hakuba locals (pictured), with the skier on the far left telling me, “I love your site! I came out to ski on my day off. I am glad that I’m off today and not yesterday since it was pouring rain. There is a surprisingly good amount of snow on the ground this morning.”

Fog and falling snow made it difficult to see the snow surface on the upper half of the resort. There was about 5 to 10 cm of new snow on the moderately firm, groomed wet snow surface of the Skyline Course and about 25 cm of new snow covering the shallow undulations on the ungroomed area (pictured). The first few runs this morning were great for enjoying the feel of the fluffy, fresh snow!

A patrolman I ran into informed me, “The southern portion of Usagidaira and the area alongside the Kurobishi 2 Quad have not been groomed today.” The base on both runs was relatively smooth and covered with 20 to 25 cm of fresh snow. Three visitors from Australia (pictured) were very excited, saying, “We are staying in the HAKUBA VALLEY for two weeks. Amazing Snow!”

“Yesterday it rained from the bottom of Grat all the way down, and the only place that snow fell was on the upper portion of Riesen Grat,” said a staff member working the Alpen Quad. One of the first skiers on the Panorama Course (pictured), which had about 10 cm of fresh snow on top of a moderately firm, groomed wet snow surface, said, “I love Snownavi! Today is actually my first time skiing at Happo.”
