The dense snow that had been falling during the early morning hours began to gradually weaken. The ungroomed NINJA Course (pictured) had about 20cm of fresh snow, and I could hear people riding the No. 12 Lift talking about how inviting the smooth slopes looked. Even with the gentle slope angle, I was able to avoid bottoming out and thoroughly enjoyed the feeling of floating on fresh snow!

Groomers were at work on Shirakaba right up until the opening of the resort, and the freshly-groomed snow there was a moderately soft powder snow. On the other hand, the bottom half of Crystal (pictured), which had been groomed earlier, had about 10 cm of light fresh snow on top of a moderately-packed, powder snow surface. In either case, there was a lot of cheering from skiers and boarders on both the groomed and ungroomed courses this morning.

Over in the SAWA area (pictured), which is a tree run on the top half and a natural surf-like half pipe on the bottom half, I enjoyed skiing on the well-packed base with 20 cm of new, fluffy snow cover. A snowboarder passing by called out to me, “I love your site! SAWA was fantastic!” I agreed and promptly went back for seconds (lol).

Around 10:00, the snow stopped and winds from the northwest picked up, sweeping away the clouds and opening up blue skies. I met two people from Osaka, who told me, “We stayed one night at Madarao Kogen yesterday. We had a very comfortable stay. It was nice to be able to go directly to the slopes from the hotel.”
