Today, the fourth Sunday in February, marks the annual “Yuki no Hi” (Snow Day) established by Nagano Prefecture in 2017. To commemorate this special day, follow the resort’s official Instagram and post a photo taken at the Hakuba Happo-One Ski Resort with the hashtags #八方雪の日2023, #happoone, and #八方尾根 for a chance to win a season ticket for next season.

This morning skies were generally cloudy, dry snow was lightly falling, and a cold north wind was blowing, but there were occasional periods of sunshine on the lower part of the mountain. The Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) was in good condition for repeating comfortable turns, with 1 to 2 cm of light, fresh snow on top of a well-packed, groomed wet snow surface. There was a 3 to 4-minute wait for the Happo Riesen Quad.

There was around 2 to 3 cm of dry, fresh snow along the Kurobishi 2 Pair, as well as on the Skyline Course (pictured), and the southern portion of Usagidaira, which all had firmly-groomed wet snow surfaces. I encountered roughly 5 cm of new snow covering the hard-packed moguls on the ungroomed areas along the Kurobishi 3 Pair and Alpen Quad.

The HAPPO PARKS area had a firm, groomed wet snow surface and was drawing crowds right from its opening at 9:00 a.m. The Kitaone forest road was groomed with a tightly-packed wet snow surface, while the wet snow surface of Sakka Wave was hard-packed. In other news, the lower portion of the area alongside the Alpen Quad (pictured) will be closed from 3/1 (Wed.) to 3/3 (Fri.) in order to host training days for the “60th ALL Japan Ski Technical Championships.”
