We are now about halfway through the season and tomorrow marks the first day of March. Although powdery snow will become less common, temperatures will be more comfortable, and the roads will be almost completely ice-free, making travel easier. Spring skiing discounts come into effect for adults and students on Monday, 3/13 (*Adults ¥5,500 / Students ¥2,500). As of 7:10 a.m. this morning (pictured), the temperature was a brisk -6°C, but it felt strangely warm, and the sky was clear and calm with a hint of spring.

The groomed, first part of the Riesen Slalom Course (pictured) had a wet snow surface initially, but gradually shifted to more of a granular snow as tracks were laid. The last half of the course consisted of a hard, groomed granular snow. I was impressed by the speed and skills of the expert skiers I spotted on the southern route of Usagidaira, whom I imagine were here to take part in the All Japan Ski Technical Championships.

The north-facing area along the Kurobishi 2 Quad (pictured) was immaculately groomed with snow that very closely approximated powder but was technically wet. In the morning, the slope was relatively empty, and I was free to make turns as I pleased. And in terms of weather, there was no wind, and the sun was shining strongly! After skiing for one or two runs, I felt hot enough to want to take off a layer.

I spoke with two skiers from Osaka (pictured), who told me, “We love your site! We actually met you on the Nakiyama 3 Triple three years ago and had you take pictures of us. The conditions are great again today.” The granular snow on the slope in front of the gondola base station was already loosening up by around 9:00 a.m.
