Sanosaka REPORT

2023.03.02115cm / Snow & Sun

After three consecutive days of sunshine that started on 2/27 (Mon.), the weekly forecast was calling for rain in Hakuba today. Just before I made my way to the resort, I saw a snow symbol on the latest forecast, but as I arrived at Hakuba Sanosaka around 8:00 a.m., it was raining lightly. The weather quickly shifted, however, and as the resort opened, there was blue sky to the west (lol). I spoke with two students from Tokyo Medical and Dental University (pictured), who told me, “We’re members of the JSC Hakuba Sanosaka Racing Center. The snow today is a bit heavy and coarse, so it might be hard to practice.”

The groomed Carving Slope (pictured) had a soft, granular snow surface, but my skis slid well, and I was able to turn well even though my edges sunk deep into the soft snow. Visitors were slow to turn out due to the rainy weather forecast.

The Second Quad, which was closed every Thursday up until the end of February, will now be open daily in March! On the slopes, I caught up with three students from Tokyo (pictured) that came on an overnight skiing trip booked through Orion Tour. The told me that two of them had never snowboarded before this trip (pictured, left and center), but that they were able to do it a bit today after practicing yesterday.

The Hakuba Snowsports School instructor I chatted with (pictured, left), said they love the Snownavi site and that their motto for the day was, “Have fun and ski safe.” The groomed Paradise Slope (pictured) and Paradise Downhill both had soft, granular snow surfaces. Around 10:00 a.m. clouds began to fill the sky, and wet snow began to fall.
