The demonstration skiing portion of the ALL Japan Student Ski Competition started at Iwatake on 3/1 (Wed.) with the individual finals, followed by the newcomers battling it out on 3/2 (Thu.), and the competition wrapping up today, 3/3 (Fri.). This morning, members of Keio University’s Riesen Ski Club (pictured) could be seen practicing until just before the 9:00 a.m. start time. On this last day, various types of group competitions took place.

The competition was a sight to see, with teammates cheering the competitors loudly and waving giant flags around the goal area. When the scores were displayed on the competition board, the skiers who finished their run could sometimes be seen hugging their teammates and celebrating.

In the men’s team competition (fixed), the Shinshu University Demonstration Ski Club I (pictured) told me before the competition that they would do their best and aim for the win, and they did! In fact, the Shinshu University Demonstration Skiing Team also won first place in the individual men’s competition, as well as first and second place in the men’s newcomer competition. As for upcoming student competitions, the technical alpine disciplines will be held from 3/12 (Sun.) to 3/17 (Fri.).

Right from the morning, the weather was sunny and clear with strong sunshine bathing the slopes. The South Slope, where yesterday’s new snow had been pressed into the groomed snow surface, had wet snow conditions with a powdery feel that were easy to ski. The Sunny Valley Course was groomed with a hardpacked mixture of granular snow and fresh snow.
