Cortina REPORT

The annual “Treasure Hunt” event was held at the Kids Park starting at 10:30 this morning. The rules are very simple: find the treasure (i.e., colored balls) hidden in the snow. Today’s top performers, a girl from Tokyo who found a big ball and a girl from Mie Prefecture who found three small balls, were each given a large toy as a prize! The other children were chose one of three small toys to take home as their reward. The next edition of the event will be held on 3/19 (Sun.), with registration starting at 10:00 a.m.

I spoke with a father from Aichi Prefecture, who told me, “I love your site! We came to Cortina for the first time in a while with another family from our neighborhood. Counting yesterday, this is the second time for the mother (pictured) and her 6th grade daughter to do snow rafting. The daughter was scared at first, but now she seems to be getting used to it.” During the 10-minute riding time, they moved from one seat to another, and smiled and waved their hands as they enjoyed the thrill of riding across the snow. The fee for snow rafrting is ¥1,500 yen per person, and includes a rental helmet.

In the sledding area of the Kids Park, there were several sets of parents and children playing with sleds. The area was groomed with a moderately firm, granular snow surface similar to the Ikenota Slope. The tubing area is next to the sledding area, and the course curves back and forth as it descends to the bottom. I spoke with a mother of one of two families from Toyama Prefecture, and she said, “Today we came out as a day trip, but next year we’d like to stay overnight. The children (pictured) are signed up to take skiing lessons with the Cortina Ski School later on, so unfortunately they won’t be able to participate in the treasure hunt.”

The resort was bathed in plenty of sunshine right from the morning, and it felt hot at times as I moved around. Both the Ipponmatsu Course (pictured) and Ikenota Slope had moderately firm, groomed granular snow surfaces that were easy to ski. The Hiedayama Rinkan Course was groomed as well, but overall was a hardpacked, with a mix of wet snow and fine granular snow at the beginning and middle of the course, and granular snow towards the end. The ungroomed Hiedayama Course 1 had a thin layer of soft snow on top of a hard base.
